Auburn – Mary Jane Cain, 79, of Auburn, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Parkview DeKalb Hospital in Auburn.
She was born on June 16, 1946, in Auburn to Harold and Joan (Luttman) Johnston.
Mary Jane was a hardworking and devoted woman throughout her life. She owned and operated JJ’s Antiques in Fort Wayne and also worked for several years at DeKalb Memorial Hospital and Betz Nursing Home, both in Auburn. She had a lifelong love for antiques, enjoyed crocheting and caring for her 19 parrots and bowled for many years in leagues in Auburn and Butler. Above all else, Mary Jane cherished time spent with her family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
On April 10, 1971, she married John Cain Sr. in Angola. He preceded her in death on February 23, 2015.
Mary Jane is survived by her five children: Joan (Glen) Deetz of Auburn; John “Butch” (Lanna) Cain Jr. of Fort Wayne; Gail (Jim) Denman of Angola; Adam (Kathleen) Cain of Auburn; and Joe (Priscilla) Cain of Auburn. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; her sisters and brothers, Elizabeth House of Oregon, Hettie Shetley of Auburn, Colleen Shetley of Auburn, Robert Johnston of Auburn, and David Johnston of Auburn; and her sister-in-law, Pat Johnston of Auburn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Tonya Axsom; two grandchildren, Kassidy Cain and Larry “Bean” Griffin Jr.; one great-granddaughter, Kylie Everage; her brothers, Jim Johnston, Richard Johnston, Harold Johnston Jr., and Donald Johnston; and her brothers-in-law, Tom House, Bill Shetley Sr., and Jack Shetley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center Street, Auburn, Indiana. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Auburn. Visitation will be held Friday from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. and again on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Mary Jane’s memory to Feller and Clark Funeral Home to assist with funeral expenses.
